Who Are We

The National Climate Change Office (NCCO) of Belize is a government agency responsible for coordinating and implementing climate change-related initiatives in Belize

Our Mission

Our mission is to facilitate the coordination of Belize’s national and international response to climate change.

What We Do

Lead and facilitate the country’s efforts in addressing climate change, including adaptation and mitigation strategies, policy development, and public awareness, with the goal of enhancing resilience and sustainability in the face of climate challenges.

Mandate

Communicate

Communicate all aspects of climate change to the public, private sector, local communities, schools and relevant stakeholders.

Coordiante

Coordinate initiatives between the public and private sectors to build Belize’s resiliency to climate change.

Mainstream

Mainstream climate change information and ideologies with the aim of embedding climate change in everyday Belizean conversations, lifestyle, actions and decision making.

The NCCO Responsibilities

We have various responsibilities related to climate change. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Coordinate the country’s national, regional and international response to Climate Change and ensure the development of a consistent framework across line ministries and agencies for mitigating the effects of Climate Change.

Coordinate Belize’s external response to the various reporting and other requirements of UNFCCC and attract or source funds to support the national effort.

Fulfil international obligations such as submitting: Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Communication’s (NCs) and the Biennial Update Report (BUR) to the UNFCCC.

Lead Belize’s national and international agenda on climate change, including coordinating the National GHG Inventory, and establish an appropriate GHG Management System.

Coordinate climate change activities across sectors, support Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects, and mainstream mitigation and adaptation strategies into the country’s sustainable development agenda.

Coordinate the development of policies, programs, projects, studies and assessments related to climate change and building climate resilience.
